Prague, one of the most exotic and mesmerizingly beautiful cities of Europe and the capital city of Czech Republic has its fair share of weird facts and trivia, which help to make it even more interesting.
Petrin hill – lovers’ day
May 1st is unofficially celebrated as the lovers’ day or the Czech version of Valentine’s Day. This day is celebrated by carnally charged couples by kissing and smooching atop Petrin hill, one of the most beautiful sites in Prague which afford a hill top view over the rest of the city. But before getting cozy on the hill top heaven they place flowers at the feet of the statue of Victorian romantic poet Karel Hynek Macha, who has been immortalized by his romantic piece – May.
Saint Nicholas
This is an annual festival, celebrated with a lot of fanfare in December from 4 in the evening onwards. On the eve of Saint Nicholas, Santa Claus himself will be roaming around the city streets, distributing sweets and gifts to children and kids and indulging in boozing with beer on the day of the saint.
He will wander about under the fireworks and Christmas trees, in the company of a devil and an angel on the night of December 5th. Saint Nicholas represents the spiritual idea of confession, the devil is representative of punishment and the angel represents reward.
The goodies are distributed to the well behaved individuals by the angel whereas the coals are handed out to rascals and miscreants of the past year.
Witches’ night
This is yet another weird annual extravaganza held on April 30th on Petrin hill which is known as Witches Night for the natives of the Czech Republic. On this day, an effigy of a witch or a hag is taken to the hill top and burnt there. This ritual is celebrated throughout the country and the venue of the Prague chapter of the Witches Night is Petrin hill.
